Higher prices curbing Japan’s appetite for Aussie beef
TOKYO – Japan’s imports of Australian beef have not grown much of late, with the meat having largely lost its price edge against its American rival on supermarket shelves here.
Australia should be exporting much more beef to Japan. Japanese tariffs on Aussie beef have fallen from 38.5% before the bilateral economic partnership agreement took effect in January 2015 to 27.5% for frozen and 30.5% for refrigerated. But Japan actually imported only 288,500 tons in 2015 — up just 3% on the year.
