Palay production target stays: Alcala
The Department of Agriculture is confident of reaching its palay production target this year of 19 million metric tons despite the effects of the El Nino.
Businessworld, quoting Agriculture Secretary Proseso Alcala, said the forecast factored in the anticipated losses due to the El Nino, which was estimated at 957,000 metric tons.
However, Alcala said losses as of April 14 was only at 233,000 metric tons.
Last year, palay production was 18.15 million metric tons.
Alcala expressed confidence the palay output in the second quarter would be “good enough” to recover from the dip in the first three months.
The weather bureau said the El Nino is expected to weaken in April and May, but is likely to persist until August.
Alcala said the DA will revisit its target production of 20 million metric tons for 2017 while crafting the agency’s budget for next year.
