Raise animals that do not eat human food: DA
The Department of Agriculture said livestock producers should raise animals that do not compete with humans for food.
The Philippine News Agency reported that Agriculture Undersecretary for Livestock Jose Reaño said other provinces should follow the practice of Negros Occidental of producing animals that are non-competitive with human consumption.
Reaño made the statement during the three-day 25th National Hog Convention in Negros Occidental which ended over the weekend.
He said the province should be emulated for producing livestock such as swine, cattle, goat, and sheep that do not eat palay and corn, which are also consumed by humans.
Negros Occidental tops the other provinces in terms of backyard swine production as well as in sheep, goat, and game fowl production.
The National Hog Convention gathered about 5,000 farmers, producers, and other industry stakeholders.
