PH diplomats schooled on Hawaii’s fish industry
Philippine Consul General Gina Jamoralin and the Consulate General’s ATN Officer Rodel Tejada visited the Honolulu Fish Auction last January 20 to observe and understand how Hawaii’s fish industry is managed in terms of quality, safety and sustainability.
The knowledge would go a long way in terms of improving the fish industry in the Philippines and in terms of dealing with the international market for Philippine seafood.
John Kaneko, Program Manager of the Hawaii Seafood Council, explained to Philippine officials how fish are properly handled from the fishing vessels to the auction area where buyers sell the best catch, which eventually end up to restaurants and markets in Hawaii and the US mainland.
Kaneko said yellow fin tuna and swordfish are the most common varieties of fish caught in waters off Hawaii.
