McDo ripoff? Jollibee’s viral “Vow” ad makers speak up

Ripoff hugot? The makers behind heart-wrenching Jolli-webisodes have spoken up on the alleged “ripoff” of its rival’s similar concept.

Fast food giant Jollibee released its three-part Valentine special short films that set social media ablaze on Thursday. However, some netizens pointed out similarities between the ad called “Vow”, and its rival McDonald’s “First Love”, which was shown in 2009.

First Love, accompanied by the Eraserhead’s iconic Ang Huling El Bimbo, features a story about a guy who relentlessly loved a woman, only to find out years later that his “First Love” is happily married.

While majority of social media feed backs lauded Jollibee’s ad, some Twitter users tweeted their sentiments on Thursday night:

Vincent Quilop, an Art Director of McCann World Group, the agency behind the Jollibee ad, was quick to respond to the controversial claims.

“Same insight at concept lang, iba ang execution. Tigilan nyo ako sa mga ganito, dahil madami na gumawa ng friendzone stories. #schooled”, Quilop tweeted on Thursday night.

He also emphasized that the ad did not, in any way, blatantly copied content from its rival and stressed the prevalence of friendzone stories in today’s advertising strategies.
