Is Jollibee shamelessly astroturfing for upvotes, Redditors wonder
Is Jollibee shamelessly astroturfing to get more upvotes on threads and social media?
Sharp eyed redditors recently compiled posts with or about Jollibee within the period of November 27, 2017 to November 27, 2018 and detected a trend in articles and posts about the Philippines’ No. 1 fastfood.
Based on the list, the earlier posts only had a handful of upvotes but towards the more recent posts, it was already raking in more than 2000 upvotes. According to the redditor, his post was a simple observation and not intended to accuse the fastfood of doing anything shady to gain popularity online.
However, it seems that the post opened a Pandora’s Box of speculations as other redditors seemed to have been wondering the same thing. While many were miffed at the idea of Jollibee’s potential astroturfing, there were those that were amazed at how it was achieved and wondered whether the fastfood hired an army of social media and marketing teams to generate the upvotes.
Astroturfing is defined as the practice of masking the messages or organizations to make it appear that these feedback are from grassroots participants. (ANGEL ONG)
