Agriculture sector slows down in 2018
The agriculture sector’s performance this year may not be as good as last year as the combined damages and losses it incurred from several typhoons that hit the country amounted to more than P30 billion.
Agriculture Undersecretary for Policy and Planning Segfredo Serrano said the sector may have grown only by 2.5 percent this year, which is lower compared to the 3.9 percent growth it registered in 2017.
He said that moving forward, the Department of Agriculture (DA) will see if the sector could grow again by nearly 4 percent next year.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol blamed the agriculture sector’s poor performance for the year to several typhoons that hit the country, most especially Typhoon Ompong, which brought more than P27 billion worth of damages to the farm sector in September.
