PH stops pork imports from Japan
The Department of Agriculture (DA) is expected to issue today a temporary ban against the entry of pork and pork products coming from Japan upon validation of the African Swine Fever (ASF) spread in the East Asian country.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said that as of 12 noon yesterday, he has alerted the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) through DA Undersecretary for Policy and Planning Segfredo Serrano to immediately impose a ban on the entry of pork and other pork products from Japan following reports of ASF spread in that country.
He said that a formal notice will soon take effect after DA’s Quarantine Officials validated reports with the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE).
“In view of this, all Quarantine Officers in Ports of Entry all over the country are directed to implement this directive immediately,” Piñol said.
DA’s quarantine officers are also advised to review their protocols, including the foot baths installed at the Ports of Entry and the monitoring of all meat products being brought into the country by tourists.
