DA to launch Summer Coco Festival tomorrow
The Department of Agriculture (DA) will launch tomorrow the Summer Coco Festival, which aims to promote the drinking of coconut water as a refreshing and healthy drink during the hot summer months.
The “Summer Coco Festival”, which will be staged with the support of the Philippine Coconut Authority, is aimed at helping coconut farmers earn more by providing an alternative to the sale of copra whose price has dropped recently, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said.
To be displayed during the opening of the Summer Coco Festival, located in front of the DA Central Office, are high value products from coconut which include Coconut Syrup, Coconut Sugar, Coconut Chips, Coconut Virgin Oil and others.
Piñol said the idea of staging a marketing campaign for the consumption of coconut water and young coconut meat was presented by DA Regional Director for Caraga Region Abel James Monteagudo.
In his proposal, Monteagudo stressed that if only half of the Philippine population of 108 million would drink a glass of coconut water once a week, that could translate to 2.4 billion young coconuts marketed for a year.
As of now, the coconut industry is beleaguered with low coconut oil prices in the world market, resulting in a drop of copra prices, the main product of the industry, hurting many poor farmers in the countryside.
