Solon says smuggled HFCS enters PH
Senator Grace Poe said the government must first address the entry of smuggled high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) into the country before thinking about liberalizing the sugar importation.
“What makes it hard here is that there is a lot of smuggled high fructose corn syrup from different countries that are being smuggled here,” Poe said in a radio interview the other day.
“That’s additional reason why the government must not let the liberalization happens,” she added.
To recall, the country’s economic managers are now planning to liberalize the sugar importation in order to address the high cost of sugar.
According to Poe, the govenrment must first focus on boosting the local production of sugar, which remained uncompetitive compared to other countries like Thailand.
