El Niño’s damage to agri sector rise to P8B
The damages and losses the agriculture sector has incurred from El Niño already amounted to P7.96 billion, destroying as much as 268,656 metric tons (MT) of farm output.
As of yesterday, the damaged agricultural areas due to El Niño already went up to 277,890 hectares, affecting 247,610 farmers and fisherfolk.
Affected commodities include rice, corn, high value crops and fisheries.
But according to the Department of Agriculture (DA), despite the impact of El Niño to rice and corn production, their respective production targets can still be met as reported losses are only 0.96 percent of the 20 million MT target for rice and only 2.94 percent of the 8.64 million MT target for corn.
The DA had so far released P360 million for insurance payments and emergency loans for farmers and fisherfolk affected by the El Niño phenomenon.
