Filipino farmers want to supply coco water to 30th SEA Games
After “buko” or coconut water was tapped as the official energy drink at Palarong Pambansa, Filipino farmers are now eyeing bigger market, which is the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
“Their spirits buoyed by the positive response to their proposal for buko to be the official energy drink of the Palarong Pambansa this month, coconut farmers are now eyeing an even bigger and international sports event for its promotions and marketing of the natural health drink,” said Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol.
The 30th edition of SEA Games will be held at the New Clark City in Pampanga, Manila, Subic, and BLT (Batangas, La Union, and Tagaytay) from November 30 to December 10, and will be participated in by all member-countries of the regional sports association which is linked up with Asian Games.
Piñol said former Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 30th SEA Games, welcomed the proposal.
Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William Ramirez has also endorsed the proposal of the coconut farmers.
The Department of Agriculture (DA), for its part, will provide funding for the coconut farmers groups and local entrepreneurs who will showcase coconut products in both the Palarong Pambansa and the SEA Games.
