PH plans to export special rice to Japan
The Philippines is looking at exporting special rice to Japan as part of the Philippines Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (PJEPA) renegotiations, which took effect in 2008.
In a report in Manila Bulletin, Trade and Industry Undersecretary Ceferino S. Rodolfo said Japan and Philippines has concluded the third round of the PJEPA renegotiations where the latter sought for a small quota for the exports of specialized rice to Japan.
Rice, a sensitive agricultural product for Japan, had earlier been excluded from the trade deal.
“Japan should not fear us dumping rice because we cannot even produce enough for own requirement, but we can supply them with our specialized rice,” Rodolfo said in the report.
Philippines’ request came as Japan is also asking for the reduction of the automotive tariffs that enter the country.
