DA to help coconut farmers produce natural vinegar
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said the Department of Agriculture(DA) and the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) will start a nationwide training of farmers and woman-groups on producing natural vinegar using agricultural products to fill the expected supply gap.
This, as the Duterte Administration prepares to purge “fake” vinegar from the consumer market through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Next week, the DA and PCA will launch the “Natural Vinegar Production Program” with a one-day Orientation-Workshop at the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) in Quezon City.
The event will discuss the status of the Philippine coconut industry and the Duterte Administration’s thrust to develop other high-value products from coconut, as well as the potentials of natural vinegar for household and industrial uses.
During the workshop, participants will also learn about the processing and production of natural vinegar using coconut sap, coconut water, nipa sap, sugarcane juice, banana and other fruits.
PCA will also introduce the “acetator” equipment developed by the Department of Science and Technology which could process coconut water into vinegar in 16 hours.
