Misamis Occidental’s latest pasalubong offering? Bamboo straws
Many Filipinos have been shifting from single use plastics by going strawless or using alternative reusables like stainless and bamboo cutlery. But in Misamis Occidental, pasalubong centers are tapping into heir rich natural bamboo resource to make affordable bamboo straws that locals and tourists can carry wherever they go.
According to Jaylo Codilla Estoque, the products are made in Concepcion town where the locals benefit from the additional income of making the straws from the bountiful bamboo plants in their area. Using the hashtag #savetheturtles, the locals are doing their part to help ease the burden to Mother Nature brought on by the volume of single use plastics polluting the oceans.
What’s more, compared to other bamboo straws, they only cost P10 a piece which makes them the perfect pasalubong item for your friends in Manila. Useful, compact and eco-friendly. As early as now, the post has been receiving queries on possible shipping. It will be good if these straws become the normal alternative to plastic straws, right? (ANGEL ONG)
