Piggery farm in Cebu told to pay a fine worth P150,000

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) moved to impose a P150,000 fine to a piggery farm in Pinamungajan, Cebu for its foul odor and illegal wastewater discharge.

A report in Sunstar showed that the DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) in Central Visayas has issued the order to Excelsior Farms, Inc., which is located in Barangay Sacsac, Pinamungajan, Cebu.

The farm, according to the report, operates a large scale Modern Tunnel Ventilated Piggery Farm that is designed to house a total hog population of 20,000 heads.

EMB’s decision came after several complaint from the community living within the area. The piggery farm also allegedly discharges wastewater to Ulbujan River.

At the end of its investigation, EMB found out that Excelsior has violated Republic Act 9275 or the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004 and the Presidential Decree 1586 or the Philippine Environmental Impact Statement System.
