Meat processors cheer Duterte’s decision to keep lower tariff on MDM chicken
Philippine Association of Meat Processors Inc. (PAMPI), the country’s largest group of meat processors, said President Rodrigo Duterte’s order to reduce the tariff on mechanically deboned meat (MDM) of chicken to 5 percent reflects the government’s determined efforts to spur the growth of the local manufacturing industry.
MDM chicken is a vital raw material in the manufacture of processed meat products and is not locally produced.
“The President’s action sends a strong signal to local and foreign investors that the investment climate in the Philippines is fair, attractive and competitive,” PAMPI said.
Duterte signed on Monday Executive Order (EO) 82 maintaining the tariff on MDM chicken to 5 percent, which was brought back to 40 percent recently through a memorandum circular issued by the Bureau of Customs (BOC).
