Philippines’ agriculture minister yields super sweet variety of Jackfruit
Proud to be a farmer, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said that his farm yielded a variety of Jackfruit that is super sweet after three years of planting it.
This variety, well, just happens to be the best ‘langka’ for Piñol because of its firm flesh and sweetness.
“Shortly after I was appointed Secretary of Agriculture, I was introduced to the ‘Abuyog Sweet’ jackfruit variety developed by the Eastern Visayas Agricultural Research Center (EVIARC) during my visit to Leyte,” Piñol said.
“I was served a plateful of the golden fruit and after tasting it, I acquired a few hundred seedlings which I planted in my farm,” he added.
Piñol said he has planted it in his farm in Paco, Kidapawan City, which he acquired in the 1990s.
“This weekend, as I was told by my farm worker that one of the trees already had two big fruits less than three years after it was planted,” Piñol said.
“It was a pleasant surprise for me and just to make sure that the fruits will be protected from fruit borers, these were wrapped in a bag,” he added.
He is hoping that in two weeks, he could finally have a taste of the ‘EVIARC Sweet’, which he planted.
