Agri chief wants to stop real estate project in Urdaneta, Pangasinan
The Department of Agriculture (DA) will attempt to stop a real estate project in Urdaneta, Pangasinan, which Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said looks like a rice farm that’s being turned into a housing subdivision.
Piñol said he was on his way home to Quezon City from Buguias, Benguet yesterday when his driver Popoy Solis noticed huge equipment levelling a rice field along the TPLEX in Urdaneta, Pangasinan.
“Obviously the rice farm will be converted for commercial purposes, perhaps a housing subdivision. But the law on land conversion is very clear and exact. It says ‘irrigated and irrigable’ rice farms cannot be converted for any other purpose,” Piñol further said.
According to him, this is a blatant violation of the law and as a citizen and Secretary of Agriculture, he will not allow this brazen mockery of the law continue.
Piñol will ask the legal team of the DA today to immediately seek legal remedies to stop the conversion of this rice farm.
