DA to give cash assistance to farmers suffering from rice prices collapse
The Department of Agriculture (DA) is now studying what kind of interventions to implement to help rice farmers recover from the collapse of rice prices.
This could include some sort of cash assistance, said new Agriculture Secretary William Dar .
To recall, the price of palay has been falling since the passage of Rice Tariffication Law or Republic Act (RA) 11203, which allowed the entry of more imported rice into the country.
“In that law, there is a section that says DA should formulate what assistance to be given to farmers,” Dar said in a Manila Bulletin report.
“One of them is to do something like 4Ps [Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program] cash assistance,” he further said in the report.
In its latest Philippine agriculture performance report, Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said price palay has been on a downtrend in the second quarter of the year because of the presence of more low-priced imported rice in the market.
