Barangay program trades plastics for rice
Rather than leave the problem of plastic waste to the local and national government to deal with, barangay officials in Barangay Bayanan in Muntinlupa are encouraging residents to collect plastic waste so that they can trade it for kilos of rice.
Based on the feature video of GMA Public Affairs, all residents need to do is bring their collected plastics like pet bottles to the barangay hall to be traded. For two kilos of plastic, residents get 1 kilo of rice.
Even elderly residents are participating in the program. In particular, Tatay Abdon is a constant contributor to the program by bringing in the waste he collects weekly. His most recent submission weighed a total of 11 kilos of plastic which easily became 5 kilos of rice.
Residents have lauded the program for helping their families save up on rice, especially with the rising prices of goods.
