Brown rice can improve children’s health, says PhilRice
Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) said that brown rice or unpolished rice can improve children’s health.
As part of the country’s celebration of the National Rice Awareness Month (NRAM), PhilRice introduced the consumption of unpolished rice during the Brown Rice Day.
PhilRice nutritionist Rizza Ramos, together with NRAM implementers, recently led a feeding activity to Grade 1 to 6 students of Talugtug East Central School for the students to appreciate brown rice and encourage them to try the said kind of rice.
“If you have a choice, you should select unpolished rice and colored rice because it provides more nutritional benefits,” Ramos said.
Brown rice is scientifically known to have more dietary fiber, polyphenols, and antioxidants particularly rice oils.
The unpolished rice can also help in achieving the country’s goal of rice self-sufficiency as it has 10 percent higher milling recovery.
Uses of rice including rice starch, rice bran cooking oil, coffee, and milk were also promoted.
“One of the most nutritious oil is the one from the rice bran,” she said, pointing out that the other uses of rice other than being the staple food is not a common knowledge.
