Leyte coconut gets boost from DA
The Department of Agriculture (DA) has recently distributed coconut planting materials and financial assistance to the coconut farmers of Leyte.
To be specific, 20 local farmers, who are part of the Participatory Coconut Planting Project, received checks worth P3,000 each from the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), in addition to the P30,000 worth of planting materials given to the project.
Agriculture Secretary William Dar, during a dialogue with the Provincial Local Government Units, encouraged the farmers to diversify into more value-added products since the copra prices are still going down following the downtrend in prices in the global market.
“Prices are down because of oversupply of palm oil,” Dar said.
In line with this, Dar underscored the need to develop other products from coconut.
“Explore other high-value products aside from coconut oils,” he said.
