PhilRice a notch higher as gender-responsive agency
The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) has granted Level 3 accreditation to the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) as a gender-responsive agency.
According to PCW audit team, PhilRice’s programs, projects, and activities are “participatory and empowering, equitable, sustainable, free from violence, respectful of human rights, supportive of self-determination, and actualization of human potential.”
This accreditation signifies that PhilRice researches and programs respond to clients’ needs. Meaning, the agency exerts substantive efforts in creating impact to the lives of the men and women, especially the women who are marginalized in the rural areas.
As stated in the Magna Carta of Women (RA 9710), gender equality is one of the mechanisms in reducing poverty.
PhilRice, through its research for development initiatives, acknowledged the importance of reducing gender inequality by providing better access to information and agricultural resources, enhancing farmers’ work efficiency, and increasing farm competency.
As GAD-certified agency, the agency’s farm machines such as the drum seeder, microtiller, gasifier stove, and brown rice machine can be easily operated by women as they are portable and lightweight. The proportionate number of women-farmers to the male participants are also ensured during project implementation.
Moreover, women-farmers and farmers’ wives are encouraged to attend PhilRice training and seminars.
