Fisherfolk group calls out Girl Scouts for irresponsible release of tilapia into Iloilo River
Mangingisda #Save Taliptip has called out the Girl Scouts of the Philippines chapter in Iloilo for irresponsibly releasing tilapia fingerlings into the Iloilo River which was supported by the Iloilo City Agriculture Office.
According to the advocacy group, the publicity stunt threatened the river’s ecosystem since the mangroves along the river serve as the nursery grounds for juvenile fishes.
In its thread, the group explained that the move introduced tilapias as invasive species that can outcompete native species. They can also feed on the eggs and other juvenile species of fishes which can cause chaos the natural habitats in the area.
Since they multiply fast, tilapia can also wipe out the existing species breeding in the area.
