SM Cherry selling ASF-positive meat
The local government of Quezon City, as verified by the Department of Agriculture (DA), has confiscated 4 kilograms of pork in SM Cherry Congressional, which is being operated by Henry Sy’s SM Supermalls, that has been tested positive for African Swine Fever (ASF).
Agriculture Secretary William Dar confirmed this in a press conference yesterday, adding that the company that supplied meat to SM Cherry has already been suspended.
While he wouldn’t answer questions whether SM Supermalls would be held liable and if other SM Supermarkets are now being investigated because of this, he issued a warning against supermarkets when it comes to selling meat that is positive for ASF.
“To all supermarkets, let’s not give space for meat that has ASF because you’re only spreading the virus,” Dar said.
Dar said the company that supplied meat to SM is Northstar Meat.
