Locally produced pork and chicken assured for Metro Manila
Amid the coronavirus-triggered lockdown, the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) said there is surplus supply of local pork and poultry products for at least the next five months.
According to SINAG, the latest inventory of frozen pork in accredited cold storage remains high at 43,398 metric tons (MT); poultry products at 56,521 MT. These figures are much higher than the inventory last month or even last year.
SINAG Chair Rosendo So said that at this time of a global health pandemic, there must already be a realization from industry players that food self-sufficiency is the only way to feed the people.
“We must only rely on our own capacity and capability to put food on our dining tables,” So said.
He added that it is time to seek, support and patronize local industries.
“Enough of this profit-driven penchant for relying on the vulnerable global market for the country’s food needs. Global food supply is unsafe, unreliable, erratic and expensive. We are all making sacrifices with the Enhanced Community Quarantine; and yet there are people that would still want us to panic and import; and open the country further for more public health problems,” So said.
“We should trust and only rely on our own farmers, raisers, fishers, suppliers and local agri industries for our own food needs,” he further said.
