Bayer Crop Science targets 100,000 Filipino farmers for its hybrid seeds
Rice and corn seed producer Bayer Crop Science (BCS) wants to see 100,000 Filipino farmers migrating to its highly profitable hybrid seeds by 2021.
In a statement, BCS said this target is “reasonable”, especially through partnerships with the Department of Agriculture (DA) and with other stakeholders such as the farmers’ cooperatives, seed distributors, and financiers.
The number would be an increase from the 60,000 farmers in the country so far using Bayer’s hybrid seeds, which are resistant to diseases and could bring yield gain of 50 to 130 percent.
The hybrid business is part of its aim to contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
