Starbucks barista shamed for not serving woman w/o face mask gets $74,000 in tips
US$74,000 is nearly P4 million in Philippine peso terms, and that’s how much a Starbucks barista in California received after a woman shamed him for not serving her because she was not wearing a face mask.
Like here in Metro Manila and other parts of the country, residents living in California are also required to wear face masks all the time due to the persistence of COVID-19 pandemic.
However, a certain Amber Lynn Gilles broke this rule and she did not only think she would get away with it but also thought it’s okay to shame someone who is just following the protocols.
After Lenin Gutierrez, a barista at a Starbucks branch in San Diego, California, refused to serve her because she’s not wearing a face mask, she took the matter to Facebook and tried to get the sympathy of the netizens.
“Meet lenen from Starbucks who refused to serve me cause I’m not wearing a mask. Next time I will wait for cops and bring a medical exemption,” she said.
But instead of receiving sympathy, Gilles was told to stop shaming Gutierrez, who was just following the rules.
This led to the creation of a GoFundMe page soliciting tips for Gutierrez, which had since raised US$74,000.
